View Full Version : Weird Squeak?

Hey there,
Just thought that this was odd. I haven't ever heard this sound come from my truck before, but I have this weird squeak that is coming from the underside of the truck. It only happens when I accelerate, lightly and moderately. I can't hear it when I get on it cause the exhaust definitely over powers it but I can definitely hear it when I feather the pedal a little. So, I only have one guess but I haven't been able to check cause I'm away from home for a couple of days. I think that it might be the leaf spring helpers rubbing up against the leaf spring but not sure. It also happens when I go over bumps, speed bumps, etc. Never happens when I hit the brakes. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I had a bad squeak that was coming from the right rear leaf spring, on the factory overload spring. That round roller looking thingy on the back half of the spring was squeaking badly. I greased it and the rest of the bracket that goes around the leaf pack pretty well with some thick marine grease and its been good so far.

I actually took mine to the dealer for the squeak and they tried to blame it on my rear block.
I figured it out by jumping on the rear bumper and listening for the sound. If the problem is a squeaky leaf, you should be able to hear it when you get the suspension working. You may want to leave the grease out though, could get sloppy.

There was a TSB released for squeaky rear leaf springs. They will put sleeves that look like the first pic and put in new bolts like you see in the pic. And they go in the place that the arrow points to in the second pic. This calls for one hour to replace them and you can buy the OEM parts for a few bucks.

I just remembered one thing. If you use a grease, make certain to use a water soluble lubricant on leaf springs and here is why. If you use a grease that is lithium based, it will actually attract dirt and promote it sticking to the grease. This will actually cause MORE wear and metal pitting in the long run. There are spray greases out there that will work great and I actually have some on our parts department shelf. I can get the name of it for everyone tomorrow. We use it on rollers and bearings that are in dirty applications.
Dirt does NOT stick to it, the only downside is it is not a long term fix and you have to reapply it every few months. I actually used it on my 05 titan for quite sometime until I decided to buy the items to fix it.

Sweet! Thanks for the help gang! I'm gonna go jump on my truck now and find out where that squeak is coming from!

It is usually sharp movements that trigger the leaf spring squeak found in the TSB such as going over sudden bumps. It usually does not happen when the leaf springs are loaded.

Oh...well that's good to know... prolly why it happens when I lurch forward then or over speed bumps?.... I'll just jump for fun in the rain :)

The parts were updated for production on the 07's and 08's.

My 06 always squeeks in the rear. My $22 Spring Mod springs were not the cause. Does anyone know all the part numbers of the parts Shailey listed above. I'd love to try them. The sound is downright embarassing if you roll down the rear window. :'(

Go to Bodean's sponsor thread and list a new topic there. He can get you the right ones. I don't have the TSB listing or I could give them to you. Sorry about that.

When does it happen? Anytime? When accelerating, mornings, evenings, going over bumps?

It only happens when going over bumps. It sounds like keys jingling

I am really going to need some help on this one. Unless someone has hidden a set of keys in your hood, this will be tough. I just picked up my keys, shook them and am going to have to think of what could possibly break and then sound like that.

Did you drop some keys into the engine bay and they got stuck on a suspension component? ;)

I had a squeak coming from the front also.Drove me crazy! It would do it while driving on uneven pavement and seemed to do it on light to moderate acceleration. I finally figured it out!
It was the hood stops in the back that had worn thru the paint and started rubbing bare metal.
I put a dab of grease on the bare spot and the squeak went away. I later adjusted the height of the stop and covered up the bare spot on the hood with some self sticking felt pads that I bought from home depot, that are use for the bottoms of desk lamps.I have been squeak free so far. I hope this helps.
