The defroster uses the air conditioner and if you have not used it in a while it can deveop mildew in the system. After using the defroster for a bit make certain and turn it off and run the system at a faster fan rpm for a bit. Don't drive around with it on after the need for it goes away.

Wow ,i just started noticing this a few weeks back. Like a damp smell is coming from my vents....also was as soon as I moved back to Colorado... and was wondering if the drop in temp. had cause some sort of condensation somewhere...
Is there a way of cleaning it out, you think just running the ac full blast is sufficient.. The smell is not constant , it goes away after a while....but its always there at the beginning.

If you turn the a/c off and run just the fan for a bit, it will clean it out. I don't know of another way. Maybe someone else knows of a way.

Had this problem constantly with my '02 Q45 - dealer would spray something called Frigi Fresh (sp?) in the outside
vents while running the A/C on high (but not recirc).
Seemed to keep it at bay for 8 or 9 months.

Here is some info on Frigi-Fresh and Frigi-Clean:

Here is a vehement dissenting opinion on the Frigi-* products:

I have had the smell. When possible, I crank on the heat full blast and that seems to help.

WOW that guy's a/c odor must have been way worse than mine was !

I have to agree with him to the extent that it was not an issue I was expecting to have to deal with in a $60K lux auto.
It's embarasing to turn on the defrosters and have the interior of your expensive sedan smell like a gym locker !! >:(
Infiniti did offer to replace my ductwork (many other Q45 owners opted for this), but I shivered at the thought of tearing the dash
apart. Figured it would just never be the same no matter how careful they were.

My wife's '03 G35 and my '95 Q45t did not have this problem, but, it was a common issue in the '02- '06 Q's & M's.

In the end, it was 1 of the many nagging unresolved (but seemingly minor) issues that caused me to sell the Q before it's "time".
And I'll never buy another Infiniti product ....................
