View Full Version : what gets off yellow road paint
i've driven through half-dozen construction zones in the last week and one of them got yellow road-stripe paint all over the side of my truck. The only thing that worked a little bit so far is my fingernails on the painted part. But with tens of thousands of paint spatter marks all over this would take forever and I'd have bloody finger stumps left. (eww)
any suggestions let me know

Bug & tar won't do anything. That stuff is tough as nails. When I detailed cars, the only thing I found to take it off is lacquer thinner. Apply to the rag, wipe. Now, you will need to then really wash, clean, polish, and wax the area really well, as the thinner will take the protection off. But I've not found a car cleaning product worth its spit to get road paint off. Trust me.....

The only thing I have found is gasoline. But there again you must wash the area very well afterwards & wax after that.

Had the same thing happen driving through DC a few years ago. The only thing that took it off was Goof Off. Be really careful not to get it on ANY plastic as it will etch the clear plastic and pretty well ruin any other. As with lacquer thinner, wash it off good after and wax the heck out of it. Good luck. I HATE it when that happens.

Gas, kerosene, etc...
My 80 yo aunt completely blasted the entire side of her caddy a few years ago, what a PITA to clean off. Tried everything, but nothing seemed to work.

my first post...great site!
Please try a clay bar before you start with the solvents. Just keep in mind that a clay bar will also remove the previous wax/polish protection, so you will need to set aside enough time for the whole process. Consider a complete compound and polish before the wax or sealant.
Good luck!

I second the WD40, it's worked for me on a number of occaisions. When all else fails, GOJO hand cleaner will get anything off but could wear down the clearcoat as well.

you can also buy black plastic renewers that have black dye in them to cover the paint or fix the mirror after you messed it up with laquer thinner ! spray paint over paint in wheel well semi gloss or flat black
