Team Fishtrackers decided on a last minute “End of Summer” Kayak adventure. We loaded up the kayaks and fishing poles and headed up to Beavers Bend in Oklahoma. It was our first trip, and God willing, not our last.

We spent a couple of days on the Mountain Fork River. We were told the schools in Oklahoma have been in session for a week, and coupled with the rainy days, we saw only about a dozen Texans on the 9 mile stretch of river. If you have a hankering to try it, we had a good experience w/ Ambush Adventures shuttle service. They provided shuttle service for $10 per kayak and were courteous and prompt.

Even though it rained more than it didn’t, the scenery was spectacular and the water refreshing. No trout caught (Though the they say they are there), but we caught fair numbers of bass while deciding to keep only a couple for table fare.

There are enough small riffles and rapids to make it fun for the younger Fishtrackers and yes, I learned a very important lesson about spreading / balancing the gear on the yak when I went over the 3 foot water fall. Since I have the massive Gator Hatch everyone assumes they can load dear old Dad up w/ all the extra gear. Needless to say, when I went over the water fall, the nose planted and I did a great re-enactment of the Titanic. LOL. Kids and wife loved it and began commenting on how they thought I should do it again for pictures……..

The water is cool and clear, the 9 miles are an easy 8 hour day with 3 hours spent fishing in private fishing holes or taking a swim above some riffles. It is only a short 3 hours from Tyler and takes you by some fun BBQ joints. For an affordable place to fish and kayak w/ decent lodging and spectacular scenery, it gets a Team Fishtrackers 2 thumbs up!

We've camped at the state park there. The campsites weren't great, and you can't reserve any of them. The bathhouses were nice and very clean though. Lots of things to do in the state park as well.
