I am thinking about painting the steel wheels on my wife's Jeep, but there is a substantial amount of surface rust on them. I have scrubbed them with a few rust removing compounds with little success. The wheels are about 13 years old.
Any input on the best way to prep and paint would be appreciated. I think I am going to use the Dupli-color wheel paint.

i'd take them to a powdercoater. they will sandblast and powder them most any color

Thanks, but I am trying to get out of this project for CHEAP! I wonder how much it would cost just to get them sand blasted?

cheapest way i can think of,is to buy a wire wheel for your drill and clean the rust off that way. otherwise i'm think sandblasting would be around 20.00 ea. just a guess

If you got a buddy with a bead blaster (blast cabinet) in their shop that would be the way to go. If not use a wire (soft) wheel on your grinder so it won't gouge your wheels.

Make sure you use a rust inhibiting metal primer after cleaning them with the wire wheel, else they will just rust up again & bleed thru. You'll never get all the rust unless you sand/media blast them.
